Scaffolding Reading Comprehension

Think-Aloud Modelling + Guided Group Annotation

Course: BEd (English Language)

Duration: 120 minutes

Students: 90 undergraduates (Year 3/4)

Pedagogy: Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development

Why ZPD?

"What a child can do with assistance today, she will be able to do by herself tomorrow."
— Lev Vygotsky

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, students will be able to:

  1. Apply a think-aloud protocol to make reading strategies visible
  2. Use collaborative annotation to co-construct meaning
  3. Analyze how ZPD scaffolding moves learners forward
  4. Evaluate scaffolded reading strategies for diverse learners
  5. Design a mini-lesson segment with think-aloud and group annotation

📝 Diagnostic Quiz (Moodle)

5 questions on:

  • Zone of Proximal Development
  • Purpose of think-aloud
  • Annotation symbols
  • Scaffolding vs. simplifying
  • Reading strategies

Adaptive feedback provided after each answer

Lesson Timeline

Time Phase Focus
0:00–0:15 Introduction ZPD hook, pre-test review, misconceptions
0:15–0:40 Part A Teacher think-aloud modelling
0:40–1:30 Part B Guided group annotation
1:30–1:45 Part C Sharing, synthesis, peer dialogue
1:45–2:00 Closure Post-test, exit ticket, summative preview

Part A — Think-Aloud Modelling

Teacher reads Text A aloud and verbalizes strategies:

  • 📍 Predicting: "I think this will be about..."
  • 🔍 Clarifying: "I'm not sure what this means, let me..."
  • Questioning: "Why would the author say...?"
  • 🔗 Making connections: "This reminds me of..."
  • 💡 Inferring: "Reading between the lines, I think..."

Then pairs debrief: "What did the teacher do?"

Introduce Annotation Code Card: ?, *, !, C, P, INF

Part B — Guided Group Annotation

15–18 mixed-ability groups of 5–6 students

Each member annotates Text B individually, then shares in group

Roles:

  • Leader — keeps time, ensures everyone speaks
  • Scribe — records annotations on Padlet
  • Clarifier — checks understanding with questions
  • Connector — links to course readings / practice
  • Reporter — shares group thinking in synthesis

Post on Padlet Gallery: one puzzling phrase + one connection + one new understanding

Assessment and Alignment

ILO Assessment
Think-aloud protocol Observation, exit ticket naming strategies
Collaborative annotation Padlet gallery, group work observation
ZPD analysis Discussion, exit ticket reflection on peer support
Evaluate scaffolding tools Summative rubric on differentiation
Design mini-lesson Summative mini-lesson plan (10-minute segment)

Summative Task: Design a 10-minute mini-lesson with think-aloud script + group annotation task

Differentiation and Inclusivity

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) embedded throughout

Reflection and Next Steps

Use exit tickets and Padlet to:

  • Identify persistent misconceptions
  • Gauge confidence with strategies
  • Spot groups needing more support

If needed, adjust:

  • Repeat modelling on shorter text
  • Add micro-teaching challenge
  • Rotate roles mid-task

Next Session Goal

Students micro-teach a 2-minute think-aloud to peers — making reading strategies visible, social, and transferable
